ESBB Awards
ESBB awards are being established to honour excellence, service and outstanding achievements or contributions across an array of activities at ESBB or biobanking.
ESBB will honour volunteers and renowned biobankers for their work in line with the vision and mission of ESBB at ESBB’s annual meeting, e.g. during ESBB General Assembly Meeting.

Outstanding Achievement Award
The ESBB Outstanding Achievement Award recognises achievement by individuals, teams and organisations that demonstrate commitment to biobanking or biobanking research and/or education. It is awarded as a recognition for outstanding lifetime achievements in biobanking.
The Outstanding Achievement Award represents the highest expression of recognition for sustained advancement of ESBB and biobanking.
This award recognizes outstanding performance by a member of the ESBB community whose career has been distinguished by a continued commitment to excellence in endeavours of science, research, and leadership.
Leadership will have been demonstrated by the individual’s scientific achievements and sustained commitment to building ESBB as a vibrant international society, adapted to future needs, and enhancing the value of ESBB to its colleagues.
Collectively, the individual’s contributions will have greatly influenced and enriched the ESBB community and ESBB programs over a sustained period.
Recognition will emphasize contributions to science and its application to policy.
Additionally, the Award recognizes efforts in support of colleagues and mentoring of young scientists.
The Outstanding Achievement Award is presented each year at the ESBB annual conference.
ESBB Leadership Award
For an individual who has demonstrated remarkable leadership to ESBB and in the field biobanking. Awardees are individuals who advocate for ESBB and for biobanking and positively impact the community by educating decision makers, the public and the media and/or affecting policy and legislation through effective advocacy at the local, national and/or international levels to achieve positive change
ESBB Distinguished Service Awards
ESBB Distinguished Service award (annually):
The ESBB Distinguished Service Awards recognizes an ESBB member who has demonstrated outstanding service to ESBB and/or the biobanking community that greatly exceeds the normal expectations of voluntary service. Service awards recognize the achievements and contributions of members who went above and beyond for ESBB. This could be members of various expert groups, working groups, biobanking congress steering committees, operational groups, and strategic pillar committees, as well as all outgoing conveners of ESBB related biobanking congress sessions and ESBB regional conferences.
-The ESBB Outreach Award recognises an ESBB member who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of biobanking or ESBB by promoting biobanking and ESBB within the European, Middle East, African and/or international community and/or beyond.
-The ESBB Event Award recognises an ESBB member who has made an outstanding contribution by organizing/hosting/conducting and/or substantially sponsoring an ESBB event which can be either the annual meeting, a regional meeting, a symposium, workshop or any other type of event that remarkably increases ESBB’s visibility or advances ESBB’s reputation.
- The ESBB Membership Award recognises an ESBB member who has made an outstanding contribution to sustain, grow and engage ESBB’s membership by any type of activity.
- The ESBB Education Award recognises an ESBB member who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and delivery of ESBB’s educational program at all professional levels.
- The ESBB Science Award recognises an ESBB member who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and delivery of ESBB’s science program fostering ESBB’s achievements and visibility in science & innovation.
ESBB Prix d'Excellence
The ESBB Prix d'Excellence recognizes the highest level of achievement in biobanking or important contributions to ESBB’s vision.
Like the community ESBB envisions, this award is broader than ESBB. Contributions within the ESBB region and throughout the world are recognized. Candidates for this award do not need to have had an association with ESBB, although their work and achievements will be relevant. They will have contributed to biobanking, through their research, scientific leadership and/or leadership in the objective application of science to policy. Innovation, teamwork, mentoring, and objective communication with the public exemplify the career of the recipient of this award.
The Prix d Excellence is presented every third year at ESBB’s annual meeting, e.g., during the ESBB General Assembly.
