The ESBB educational webinar on October 24th at 3 pm CEST will focus on plant biobanking with the topic "Mechanisms of vitrification for mint diversity biobanking": The molecular mechanisms of cryoprotectants, especially vitrification solutions, are poorly understood. In plants, the permeation of individual compounds is additionally influenced by the presence of cell walls and vacuoles. Nancy Levinger and her team found a way to directly observe and track Plant Vitrification Solution 2, consisting of w/v, 30% glycerol, 15% ethylene glycol, 15% DMSO and 0.4 M sucrose in mint shoots. However, the conservation of mint could be complicated by its great taxonomic and consequently compositional diversity. Taxonomist Olivier Heylen provides some information about mint diversity and the possibility of biobanking. Nancy Levinger (Colorado State University, USA) - Direct observation of PVS2 components permeating into mint shoot tips (30 min) Olivier Heylen (Oteas consulting & data analysis, Belgium) - Challenges in mint taxonomy and its implications for biobanks (15 min) In collaboration with ISHS (International Society for Horticultural Science). This is joint event sponsored by both ISHS (International Society for Horticultural Science) and ESBB”
